I could not get consistent stitches. I finally figured it out and this is not in the manual. There is the thread tensioner but above is another tensioner. I had to wrap the thread a full degrees around it and then down the rest of the thread path into the main tensioning device.

Not too long ago, every town had at least one shop that sold and repaired typewriters. But in the cyberage, when even the verb “to type” is being replaced with the verb “to keyboard,” typewriter repair is an endangered art.

When I bought it, it had only been used as a hall table for many years and the machine itself was never used by the owner. The table was in really good condition and clearly had been polished regularly. The machine however needed cleaning and the power lead, pictured below, needed replacing. Thankfully after a good clean and service I ended up with a great working machine. This tutorial came about because I could not find much information on cleaning these old sewing machines.

Here I will share with you how I clean my machines, no matter how old they are. Early history[ edit ] Precision astronomical regulator Howard was a clockmaking apprentice of Aaron Willard , Jr. They also became known for their manufacture of sewing machines , fire engines and precision balances. About , with a third partner, Luther Stephenson, they began to also manufacture tower clocks.

In , David P. In December , Howard bought out Rice’s interest and began manufacturing watches of a new design, signed “E. The Howard firm established itself as perhaps the premier American manufacturer of luxury watches from into the s. This firm continued the manufacture of many clock styles, primarily weight driven wall timepieces and regulators of fine quality. Only two common wall models, 5 and 10, were produced as stock items, all others being manufactured by special order.

Regular watch making operations ceased in , when the Howard name in association with watches was sold to the Keystone Watch Case Co. Keystone purchased the defunct US Watch Co. The big issue is that these machines were made to use the x13 needle. While it is available mail order there are only sizes 12 and 14 available. The x13 needle has the same timing length as the popular 15×1 but is slightly shorter overall. Careful examination and testing showed my machine was running a 15×1 needle when I bought it and that it works properly in all respects.

This includes sewing full width pattern stitches on an 8 layer stack of 10 canvas. There are two routes: Adjust Needlebar, hook and feed dog timing. I found no references which recommended this option and only warnings of poor performance. Increasing the needle clearance to the bobbin case by increasing the depth of the “half moon” cutout on the bobbin case.

This is easily accomplished with a Dremel type tool with a grinding stone bit. There are a number of anecdotal reports of the success even to the extent of using industrial dbx1 needles same dimension as the 15×1 with a round shank. Bobbin modification is not original to me, but I hope to document it a bit better. I confirmed by direct observation that my vintage bobbin case was probably modified and that modern replacement bobbin cases do not provide the needed needle clearance for the 15×1.

I ran 16 layers of cotton poly twill pant leg material through using V46 thread and a 18 dbx1 needle these were just close to hand without issue.
